I have a water barrel in the basement of my house and am trying to figure out how to move water to tanks in my basement and first floor. I'd like to use a pump but which one would be strong enough and are there any I could put a valve on the end of the tubing and shut it off when I no long need water without burning out the pump.

I don't have a basement so don't need quite a large pump. I don' thave a sump either, but when I did, I had a Quiet One 4000pump to move water to the DT.

First thing you need to figure out is what head pressure your up against. Total all the vertical distance you need to move the water then add 1 foot for each 90* elbow your using. That will be your approx head pressure. Then determine how fast you want to move the water. Looking then a the different manufactures pump curves you should be able to find a pump that meets you needs. BTW, this assumes minimal pressure from the size of the piping. ie 1000gph in 1" pipe is ok, but 2000gph is not and will add additional head pressure. Going to say 1.5" pipe and your again negligible. There is a lot more detail to it, but this is a good first approximation.
