About to begin set up in my classroom. My science dept has a Deionized water system in our chem department. Is that water good to use? What's the difference in DI and RO do I need both? will I need to do any further treatment to the DI water to use it in my tank other than adding salt.

RO uses mechanical, chemical and membrane technology to reduce TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) by around 98%.

DI utilizes chemical exchange technology to now reduce that approximate two percent to 0 TDS.

If the chemistry department has DI water, the likelihood is that the have a RO\DI system......unless they are assuming distilled water is DI water.

Bottom line, pick up a hand-held TDS meter and test the water. Ideally you want zero TDS.

My chem teacher wasn't sure what she had other than it is DI. I just called the company that installed ands maintains our system and yes it is an RO/DI system with a 15o gal pressure tank back up. He said it is designed to be an "On Demand" System. So I guess I am good. (should be able to just add salt and fill Tank) Maybe I should start bottling for resale :):)
