What is easier? Dechlorinating water myself and making saltwater at home, or making multiple trips to store for reef ready salt water. This is to fill my entire 46 gallon tank. I am new to this and would love to know what will be easier for me to do?

What is easier? Probably doing it yourself, depending on how far away the local fish store is.

I don't know how much research you have done so far, but using pure H2O is best, especially if you plan to keep and grow coral. RO/DI systems is a worthy investment if you plan to do this long term. Hope that helps.

I'd go the route of getting your RO/DI saltwater from the LFS. You will need several trips at first, but your water changes on a 46g tank will only be around 5g every week or two...easy to pick up 5g RODI saltwater from LFS at this amount.

You can dechlorinate tap water, but you will not have removed all the other impurities like an RODI system would do.

Not sure of your distance to your lfs so it's hard to call but if you own your own home then it's 100% worth investing in an rodi filter and mixing your own!

Hybrid option:

(1) Pay your LFS for enough water to fill your 45-gallon tank initially. (2) Get 5-gallons worth of cheap distilled water each week when you go grocery shopping to mix with salt as your water-change water (and an extra gallon for fresh top-off) (About a $6 weekly distilled water investment.) (3) Save up money for your own RODI system for the long-run. Best wishes!

My lfs is about a mile from my house actually which is nice. And it’s the only one in the area. I may go that route since I’m not working maybe eventually I’ll get an RO/DI. This pandemic is annoying but nice I get to work on getting my tank ready. And the lfs is open!
