Water smelling bad

Agree on starting with a water change but in order for people to give you any practical advice about your issues you should include your complete water parameters and information about your system such as age, lighting (type, intensity, schedule), filtration methods, protein skimmer? and inhabitants.. full tank pictures are also very useful

Figure out what is causing the smell. When was the last time you cleaned the skimmer? When was the last time you changed carbon? What are you putting into the water? What does your source water smell like?...

Does it smell like algae or rotting organics? There is a lot of things that can cause stink. I for one hate the smell of algae, and dead snails are the worst smell in the world. Funny, when my reef smells like the ocean, I consider that a win.

Also, what kind of tube worm killed you clowns? that sounds fishy. Did you clowns show signs of illness? white spots, pale skin/scales, scratching, etc. or did they just drop dead? If it was a parasite or disease, you may want to hold off on adding more for a while, if they dropped dead, did you check ammonia after you added the second set of clowns?

Do i have to run carbon??
If you don’t run carbon then that could well be a cause of yellow tinted smelly water, assuming nothing else is majorly wrong with the system and assuming there is plenty of filtration in place (we don’t have much system detail)

I run carbon 24/7 amongst other things and the water is crystal clear with no smells. It removes organics amongst other things.

Alternatively or in addition run a series of 10-20% water changes over a week or so and change out the water for some fresh water.

It sounds like you may be having several issues including new tank uglies. I would suggest a good cleaning and a large water change to start.

Got any pics?
