Getting a whole house water softener put in and wondering if its good to run soften water through my RODI. Or if I should have that line bypassed so I am not wasting all that water through the water softener.

I’ve done both. The water softener doesn’t hurt it that I’ve noticed, but it does use up the salt.

You should be fine, installing after your softener might improve your membrane lifespan.
Water softeners work by replacing certain minerals with salt. The salt is easier to remove than some other minerals through ro.

I got ours a few years ago, and I love it. I also opted for the Prefilter and large carbon filter that needs to be changed once a year. This filters the water before it hits the water softener. It will also prolong the resin inside the softener. The 5 stage RODI TDS is under 5 with 1.5 years of usage on a 500+ gallon system. Before I got the water softener my input TDS was 240-260, and I would need to replace the filter much more frequently. I go through 1.5 to 2 bags of salt a month.
