Water spinning out of return pump

hi all,

Is it normal to have the water spinning coming out of the return? It almost looks like a vortex for lack of better words (mini tornado haha). I was curious if I needed to make an adjustment. I tried to get a picture but failed.

At certain flow rates, with the return close to the surface, you can definitely create a vortex. Easily fixable by lowering either the flow or the return nozzle. Make sure your sump can handle the additional volume from a back syphon if lowering the return deeper into the display.

Sumps only about half full, so it could handle it. I am curious if this could cause my flushing problem on my drain?

Flushing? If you mean the drain fills, then quickly drains, you need to adjust the flow in the drain line. Use a ball or gate valve to do this making SMALL adjustments until things Ballance out. You don't want to choke the drain line so much the return floods the tank

It’s like the drain can’t keep up. Fills above the holes and flushed. I posted a thread a few days ago and tried everything people suggested.

I see what you are talking about. The flush is when the full syphon kick in and drains the overflow. It not really an issue of keeping up, it's an issue of too much. The backing up over the holes is a "bubble" for lack of a better term, and when it burps, the full syphon kicks in and it drains.
Using a gate or ball valve will create enough back pressure to keep things stable, quiet, and at the correct level.
Like I said earlier, though, make small adjustments until things stabilize. Once set, you shouldn't have to touch it again.

Just thought about this too. Have you checked to see if the small hose at the top of the elbow is clogged? That can cause the same symptoms

Just cleaned it today actually. It was my last attempt at hoping to fix it. So I should put a valve on the drain line? If so where at in the piping?

I put mine where I could get to it easily. Also make sure there isn't a kink or uphill run in the drain line. These too can cause the same symptoms.
