Filled my brute trash can full of RODI 2 weeks ago, got busy didnt have time to get the salt mixing in it yet. Come back today ready and it smells a little musty, but its had the lid on.

Safe to use? Nothing has gotten into it...Feels like its just old salt smell. Thoughts?

Have you had a pump running in it for circulation? if not it may have gone stagnant. If it was me (and it's not) I would not trust it and toss it out. I find that anytime I dont feel right about something it is probably a good I dea to avoid putting it into my tank.

I am currious what other opions are.

Musty could be mildew or mold spores. Test it and see. Also when did you change your filters last? Also when was the last time you cleaned your Brute cans?

I depends on what it smells of and what is causing the smell

I store 0 TDS is plastic containers for weeks/months and it’s fine, although I haven’t noticed a smell

If your in doubt throw it away, and make some more that would be my advice

Musty usually isnt a concern, sulfide- eggy smell (hydrogen sulfide) is the one to watch out for, but usually only occurs with stagnant hypoxic water which will generally only occur in sealed containers, if it's been circulating continuously then it wont be a problem.

I would not use it and I would also clean out the container. At the very least you don't want your display tank to stink. I haven't opened my ro/di barrel in months other than an occasional peak at the water level, but just checked and there is no smell. While it's not exactly an air tight. I keep it closed 99% of the time and just have a hole drilled for the tubing. There is no circulation ever.

I also keep my water in a Brute can and it’s musty from time to time. I’ve noticed no adverse effects from it. You can always try dropping in a bag of carbon and a power head to see if that helps.

Exactly the reason I keep a UV-C sterilization light around.....

If it smells bad, I wouldn't use it. Your tank inhabitants have to live in it, so why chance it. :)
