Water storage tanks

I paid $25 for a 50gal food grade drum. Guy dropped it off so no shipping cost. Just can’t bring myself to pay over $100 for a tank to hold water.

I hear you. For me it came down to peace of mind of a factory installed bulkhead and something that looked like a fairly clean install as it is inside my home. I resisted for a while but eventually caved.

LOL. When I read this post quickly I thought of course i would pay over $100 for a tank to hold water, because I was thinking about the tank as an aquarium. If you think about the water prep tank as an extended part of the aquarium (and all of the money invested in it), then it may put the price for water prep in a different light. Of course, I realize that we all come with different perspectives - this is mine at the moment! :)

What part of my tank crashes if I can’t store water? So the storage tank breaks and you have to make water as you need it till you get a replacement.

I’ve seen a bunch of people make mixing stations out of brute trash cans. The drums I have are way thicker then that.

My setup is very simple as I'm only storing fresh water, I'll mix the saltwater as I need it. I put a float valve in the Norwesco 65gal but not sure I trust it. I'll probably only turn the water on when I'm home. Once my ball valve shows up from BRS I should be able to start filling it up.

Thanks for sharing! It looks like a very clean and straight forward system - good work! I assume that the ball valve will go into the connector that is near the bottom of the tank? If so, will the spigot/pipe extend past the wood platform or go down through the slats (I can't tell from the picture how much room the there is between the wood stand and the closed bi-fold doors)?

Thanks, Peace River. The ball valve will be plumbed into the bulkhead at the bottom and it will stick out far enough to drain into the bucket when I pull it out.

Pretty funny how you can spend $500 just setting up a water storage bin...

Does anybody have a good recommendation for a stand that I can sit a single 65 gallon vertical norwesco onto and be stable? Looking for something about the size of the tank itself so maybe 24x24 inches and raised enough that I can fit a 5 gallon pale under the spout for filling.

Make one out of 2x4’s or have one built out of steel. There are an infinite number of solutions.

Why not keep it light and use aluminium TIG welded and powder coat (just for aesthetic reasons)?
If you are on a budget, then use 2x4 or 2x3 with strong slats across the top for spillage.

Simple build. Purchase heavy duty angle iron (under $20) and have welder cut and weld for you.
Spray prime it and overpaint with rustoleum. Should be about $50 heavy duty investment
Option B would be a metal milk crate if you can locate one.
Option C would be wooden shipping crate which many companies often throw away

Water heater stand.

I have the same tank. Which adaptor did you use for the RODI tubing to be plumbed into the side?

Thanks!

Sorry for resurrecting an old post. You said you ordered a ball valve for the Norwesco tank. Do you recall if that valve was a direct fit into the 1 1/4" female NPT? I'm having trouble finding a valve or spigot that is reef safe and 1 1/4" NPT.
