What if I used a 30g pail, filled it with RO water, mixed the salt, put a powerhead in and covered it. Can I store it that way so I have an on hand supply for water changes?

As long as the pail isn't metal. 5g bucket maybe better.

I do it all the time too ..... almost always have a Brute can full of mixed saltwater and one full of rodi water. Having both ready has come in handy several times!!

Just like your tank you would need to add Ro to keep the salinity stable from evap. Not sure what the "shelf life" is on salt water storage though

So covering it wouldn't trap any toxins? Just asking because I keep my tank topless for that very reason.

Probably better to keep it covered. It will keep anything from settling on top.

thats what i do.....i have 20 gallons made ahead of salt water in my house....i dont have a powerhead in it..but when i make it a week ahead i just mix it up everyday.....now outside i have a 55 gallon trash can with r/o water ...no salt with a powerhead in it.....

As long as you keep it covered completely or partially is up to you and circulate the water, the shelf life should last you quite a while. When you stop circulating the water you give other organisms a chance to grow and take hold.

I keep at least 20g mixing at all times with a 500gph powerhead running non stop and store it in my kitchen. (I'm single so I can do stuff like that. lol) I put the drum on a 4 wheel cart so I can move if need be. I'll keep the lid tight. Thanks everybody.
