Im just wondering if anyone is using the RUBBERMAID brute cans for water storage. .....ro/di water.

I've used one for many years to mix and hold my saltwater, with no issues at all. I use a Rubbermaid wrapping paper container to hold my RO/DI topoff water. It looks like this:

Ill give it a try then heres the can im going to use.

I exclusively use those gray Brutes. They're great. I use one for mixing saltwater, one for storing a month and a half's worth of kalk for topoff, and a third to cure rock. I also keep one more around in case I need to store more water than usual.

So yep, I use them and love them!

Outstanding thanks for the feedback guess ill be buying a few today.

I use 2 55g drums for storage but for mixing I love the brutes. Make sure to get the lid.

Im thinking 2 of the big ones for water storage a small one with the wheels for water changes and mixing

I have actually heard that the brutes leak chemicals into the RO and RO/DI water. There are other but slightly harder to get food grade containers that have similar dimensions thought they are double the cost of the brute. In the long run you are better off with the later.

I kind of need something with the lid so my cats don't cause a problem .

I got a lid separate for mine was like $5
They have 10g 20g ($20) and i think a 36 and a 55, just search "white brute" on amazon.
Just make sure u pick the right lid for the size can.

The only mention of gray brutes causing problems is from Borneman. Generally, people think he had a contaminated set of brutes. Lots of us have been using brutes for years and years and years. Lots. The grays are also FDA food safe. IIRC

You'll be fine. Really. Just rinse it well.

I honestly just did it for extra precaution. Alot of people do use the grey ones as fungia_fiend said.

I use a Rubbermaid Roughneck for mixing saltwater and water changes and a 23 gallon blue Rubbermaid recycling can for my ATO storage. The ATO has been in use about 6 years, cleaned a grand total of 3 times and the TDS is still less than 1 using a handheld COM-100 TDS meter which reads in tenths. The Rubbermaids are great.

Bought a 44 gallon grey brute for ro/di storage and a 20 gallon grey brute from salt water mixing and water changes. I got the 6 wheeled dolly for the small one so I can roll it around. I set the ro/di up on a piece of 1/2 plywood and attached that to the wall. Kinda a modular idea so its easy to move if I need to. Ill post a picture when its all done

A lot,....of people use the Brute cans, I do as well. I don't know when they get old if they leach chemicals, and I've wondered too ?
I know back in the 90's, that after about 3 years the inside looked rough, so I replaced it with a new one.

I have two, one salt and the other for RO/DI. There in my fish room and both have dolly's so it's easy to move both around the house..

I have 12 44-gallon grey Brutes in use (3 as refugia, 2 as a sump, 3 for limewater, 2 for Ro/DI and 2 for new salt water). I've been using Brutes for 19 years with no apparent issues that I'd attribute to them.

FWIW, I do not think that Eric Borneman's comments on Brutes are particularly reliable or noteworthy. He never even noted if he washed them after buying them from a store where, as well all have seen, birds often poop on them, pesticides are stored all around etc. He also has no idea of what chemicals are put into trash cans. Plasticizers, for example, as not used with polyethylene, such as a Brute. it is soft and plastic enough as is. So to encourage people to think that plastizers may have been the issue is not useful.
