Not really reef related but it's water and TDS so it's in the ballpark :)

I installed a filter system for my new espresso machine under the sink. I want to get my water as close to SCAA guidelines and the only thing that's not where I want it is TDS. My current TDS is 245 and I want it to be between 150-175. Filter right now consists of a sediment filter and an Everpure ESO7 commercial filter to soften my water.

Will adding a regular GAC filter or something else give me that extra 75 TDS reduction I need? The ESO7 is doing quite a bit of TDS reduction as out of my tap the water is coming out at 400 TDS.

RO is really the only way to lower it other than DI (which would be expensive) and distilling. Looking at the ES07 filter, it appears to have a DI component to it though not sure exactly how it is working and not becoming exhausted very quickly. Carbon and sediment filters do not lower TDS.

The ESO7 is rated in max grains per gallon. Basically at my water hardness I can run ~450-500g of water through it before I have to swap it out. Based on my usage that's around once per year.

I guess I will have to look at the other everpure cartridges that have multi stages on them except for softening.

They must be using some kind of specialized DI. Normal DI would only make about 12 gallons of water before exhausted with a starting tds of 400. Just checked the cost of the Everpure ESO7. You must really like espresso!

Haha well the cost of that filter cartridge is but a fraction of what I paid for the espresso machine and scale kills boilers so I figured why not to keep the machine running in tip top shape without having to descale it.

I called everpure and they said that my only option is to add another ESO7 or go with RO water. If I did RO water I would have to add minerals back in to get the TDS back at 150 which they make a cartridge for called the 7CC. I would hate having to lug water from my garage for the espresso machine as that is where my RO system resides so I am just going to add another ESO7.

The ESO7 is an awesome filter though. The water out of my tap has 16 grains (275ppm) of hardness and out of the filter its 4.5 grains (80ppm).
