I posted this in the zoa forum too, hope that's cool....

I have noticed that over the last few months, a few of my SPS were slightly browning, yet still showing excellent polyp extension, and I started taking steps to get their color back. Those steps included increasing my lighting (even though I believe the lighting I had before was sufficient) as well as running PhosBan in my sump. My water parameters were very good prior to adding PhosBan. Well, the colors have slowly but surely started coming back. However, a few of my zoanthid colonies have been suffering, apparently as a result of these steps.

I tend to think it's the PhosBan possibly making my water "too clean". The reasons I think this may be the case is because the algae in my algae turf scrubber has basically stopped growing, even receding. Also, the chaeto in my sump, while still very healthly looking, has also stopped growing.

I was testing zero on Salifert phosphates prior to adding PhosBan, but most salty veterans on this board have indicated that it's impossible to know your phosphate levels w/o using a meter like Hanna.

While I'm happy with the return of color to my SPS, it's tough to see my zoas suffering as a result. I guess it's possible that the additional lighting is what's bringing back the color in my SPS, but it's hard to say.

I'm leaning toward removing the PhosBan from my system to see what happens, but I'd appreciate any thoughts or shared experiences on this subject.

Thanks

I read an article today and it stated that you need a percentage of phosphates and nitrates so that the tank cycles naturally as the ocean, so I think possibly to much gfo and this will hinder the tank. I have .0 phosphates to .01 and nitrates are .5 and the tank is looking great and great color also with great polyp extension and no major alge growth.

Yeah, I've read the same thing too on many occasions. I'm probably overkilling it with the chaeto, turf algae, and GFO. Turf algae thrives on phosphates so it would make sense that with the GFO, there are little to zero phosphates remaining. I'm going to remove the GFO (Phosban) and assume that the increased lighting is what's helping my SPS. We'll see.....

what size tank ? and what Phos reactor ? i was thinking you might be running too much GFO in the reactor my self . i have done that before too with a TLF reactor , took the GFO out and cut it in half and with in 2 weeks the colors were back and phos were still at 0. ,,start from there see if that makes and difference . good luck

If you had to much gfo it will shock the coral! I have a heavy load on my 90 and run a 150 reator with 150grams of gfo and change out every two months depending on my testing, also make sire you do not have to much circulation otherwise you will breakdown the gfo and will enter the water colony! Good Luck!

Phosban is not that potent from my exp. If you were running rawaphos maybe but still doubtfully IMO... What kind of lighting did you have and what did you upgrade to??

I noticed when I run phosban my large tubs blue zoa colony starts to melt away, but not my other zoas. As soon as I take the phosban out, they look better and start to melt again if I add it again.

I dont think they would brown from too much GFO. I would think they would lighten up and eventually bleach out.
