Checked their website today as I've been researching what new tank I want and noticed a sharp increase with their pricing.

Bummer, that. I was considering a waterbox along with red sea for my first setup. That will probably decide things for me. I'm curious as to what triggered the price hike.

here's some cached google searches with the old pricing. specifically for the Reef 100.3

now it's $2160...

I was looking at getting one myself but that just changed my mind as well.

WOW...glad I decided to order mine last week! I'm getting the frag 105.4 and it too went up $300.

I would have happily paid $400 more for my Waterbox over the competition...but happening overnight when in the market would suck too.

I was willing to pay the premium already in place over a Red Sea. Another 300 on top of that, though? That's a bold strategy, Cotton.

Overnight price hikes without warning or explanation says a lot about the company. With $300 I could buy a 4ft tank from Red sea instead of the reef 100.3.

Meaning? I'm quite serious, too. I'm totes a newbie to this and I would love to better understand pricing motivations.
It just seems to me like every other part of the hobby gets to indulge in triple mark ups except tank manufacturers. Tanks and stands after all have to be hand built to a great degree and relativly local too.
As opposed to sending your design off to be manufactured in Korea.
Or marking up due to rarity like live stock.

Red sea and waterbox are made in China if I remember correctly.

Gottcha. Thanks for the insight!

I'm sure they build in/import materials from china so their export limitations due to coronavirus is a probably a big factor for a price increase

Could be. I know red sea is made in China and was told waterbox is too but I don't know that for 100% fact. I believe waterbox stands are a plywood though, which is better than red sea Ikea, I mean particle board.
