Hey Reefers,

I recently moved across town and found this as the perfect opportunity to restart my 40.1 waterbox aquarium due to a recent battle with what I thought was dino's.

I am looking for opinions on a potential stocking list. From the rough list below, what is a good combination of fish for a beginner friendly build? I realize not all of these will fit at the same time or potentially not be compatible. I also would purchase and add them slowly over time.

Thinking ~4 fish total?
  • 1-2 Ocellaris clowns (black ice)
  • 1 blenny (leaning towards a starry)
  • 1 goby (maybe w/ pistol shrimp pair)
  • 1 valentini puffer
  • 1 purple firefish
  • 1 jawfish
  • 1 filefish
  • 1 six-line wrasse
Current Equipment list
  • Waterbox 40.1
  • AI prime light
  • Sicce pump
  • Icecap 1k gyre
  • Kessil H80 (attempting refugium)
  • Cobalt Neotherm
  • Inkbird temp controller
I will try to add in a few pics soon!!

Welcome to the forum. I would consider an ATO as well (auto top off).

Thanks! Yes, I do already have a Sun sentry ATO that came with the waterbox aquarium. Don't think I could do without it!!

Let the cycling begin!!! I went with Fritz turbostart 900 + ammonia dosing
Need to work on cable management :/
Still unsure what my stocking list will be......
Also waiting for Algaebarn to get some clean chaeto in stock for my refugium.

Pods/Phyto + Chaeto are on the way. Still waiting for the tank to fully cycle.

Stocking list ideas:
- 1-2 blue stripe pipefish
- 1-2 Ocellaris clowns
- 1 tailspot, or midas blenny
- 1 yellow head, or pearly jawfish

Would this work? Also, any order you would recommend adding them in?

I would add clowns last as I believe they are the most aggressive in that list. I would post your list and question in this thread for some expert advice:

I see you dropped the 6-line Wrasse which may be the right call. A Possum Wrasse or Pink Streaked Wrasse are very docile and would be worth researching if you did want a small Wrasse.

Ammonia down to zero, from the original 2ppm dosing. I am going to re-dose with ammonia to see if tank can cycle it in less than 24 hours. If so, then I think I should be ready to go after a water change?

Water looking slightly cloudy, could be a bacterial bloom? Not sure if I need to be worried, or if once I add the pods & chaeto, plus do a water change Ill be okay?

Also, at what point would you guys recommend adding carbon to the sump area?

I added carbon when I starting adding life (live rock in my case). I have always run carbon in my tanks and change it out pretty frequently (3-4 weeks).

Water has cleared up. Chaeto + pods have been added to the tank for a few days. Nitrates are sky high, Ammonia ~0. Looking to add either a CUC or first fish sometime soon.
