Watermelon Growth Questions (pics)

I bought this as a "Tyree" watermelon well over a year ago as a 1/2 inch frag. It is now the diameter of a handball. For the first 7 months it only had 1 eye but grew. I have 2 questions.

1. Lately it has been producing new eyes like crazy. Is this normal?

2. It is growing like a frisbee remaining flat. I would think that it would "drop" to mold to the rock / plug it is on. Is this normal?

I would think light and flow would affect its growing patterns. Its doing what it likes, so maybe its just soaking up all the sun it can get? By no means am I a chalice pro/expert lol

I have seen chalices do that and some drop down to mold with what is under them. I too would like to know why...

What kind of light do you have it under and how deep is the tank?

It is about 26 inches below 2 x 150W phoenix 14k's.

I have a Tryee Watermelon also that i got from him a year ago.
mine is growing the same way so i don't think it will mold to the
plug.

My chalices grow when I stop paying attention to them.....I suck at keeping them. Acans too! But SPS grow like weeds, go figuire?!?

I think the trick to get any coral to grow is to "set it and forget it" if you keep moving it around your tank it stunts growth until it settles back in again, so the cycle is never ending. Just don't mess with it peroid and watch it take off

yea i left for school came back two weeks later everything had grown like crazy and my cyano was gone i was shocked

The only chalice I have that grows like that is the Miami Hurricane. All the other chalices grow down.
