hello all,

I’ve been going back and forth on pumps for my new reefer 525 set up (59L 24W 22T). I thought I had made my mind up on two WAV pumps, but then it occurred to me that there doesn’t appear to be a simple system for battery back up operation. The tank’s sump will be in the basement below, so I want to ensure the display tank pumps can/will operate easily on battery power. I’m not super at DIY either, certainly not comfortable rigging a battery system myself.

So does this rule out the WAVs in my situation?

Thoughts on running maxspect gyres with the icecap battery back up instead? Would I need two xf 230s or one or two 250s? Planning to do a mixed but LPS dominate reef.

I run both WAVs and Gyres on my 525. You are kind of SOL with the WAVs, as there are no real options for an easy battery back up. You could potentially do this with a UPS, but it would be a project. The Maxspects would be a better plug and play option. I run the 250s on my tank, but dont have them set above 50%. If they are the only pumps in your tank, you might want to run them higher depending on what you have in your tank.

Thanks. Great answer. Do you think I’d get enough flow out of two 250s?

What a disappoint from Neptune. Wonder what they are thinking. It’s been several years since they launched the WAV.

Because the WAV runs off of the Apex, it would be extremely hard to create a battery back up that would work all of it together. That said, there is lots to like about the WAVs, and they are nice powerheads. A pair of 250s should work just fine on a LPS tank. :D

how is your setup with them ?
I got 2 gyres and 4 wav pumps on a 240 gal 8 ft tank

I have the 450 reefer, and am super super happy with 1 wav pump and 1 gyre. You'll have to do the gyres if you want them to work with battery backups, but you could also go with both. Just the wavs wont be running if you walk into an outage
