You basically have 3 choices here......
Remove the crap on the wavemaker, it's only hurting performance, and let the nem roam. If the powehead is high enough, it should stay away from it. They rarely walk around on the glass.
Leave it on there and know there is less flow then what it should have, but the nem is probably safe.
Or just rehome the nem and not worry about it.

FWIW.....
A womans stocking works better, and you can cover the entire PH. Only downside is they need to be cleaned very frequently as they clog up rather fast.
