How important are " wave makers" for our reef tanks?

Well ,Lets say for a " Mixed Reef" SPS, LPS, few softies
p.s Chad your Avatar is REDICULIOUS..

I have 3 K4's ( thinking of adding 1 more) in my 135 tank with NO wave maker. they spit out pretty random flow..
How do you guys feel about putting them on a timer to shut off a few hours at night and just left my 2 return pumps run?? Kinda like the "lagoon effect" on MP40
lolalos have both return on Battery back up..so if power goes out im good for 30-45min...after that im in big trouble!
I would suggest putting two of the K4's on the battery backup. They are 12w each and Mag 7 are 70w a piece so that would buy you alot of time. You need flow to oxygenate the water so they would be more efficient in a power outage situation.
With that being said, I wouldn't even try to put a koralia on a wavemaker. They are not designed to start and stop continuously. Besides, they put out a nice soft flow so if you have two pumps, one on each side of the tank shooting directly at each other, the flow is going to get dispersed when the currents collide.
