Waveline Gen 2 DC-6000 Review

Back in May, I pre-ordered 2 Waveline Gen 2 pumps... A DC-6000 to replace my Mag-12 return pump and a DC-4000 to replace my Mag 9.5 closed loop pump. They arrived last Monday, and I got the DC-6000 installed that night. The closed loop will require significant re-plumbing to get the DC-4000 in place so won't be dealt with for a while.

Initial thoughts upon handling the pumps:
  • No instructions whatsoever are included. Somewhat common these days, but still disappointing.
  • The build quality seems very good. The poor threading reported on the Gen 1 pumps does not seem to exist on the gen 2 pumps.
  • The I/O Ports for controlling pump with an Apex that were reported earlier in the year by Reef Builders and others DID NOT MAKE THE RELEASE. This was very disappointing. From what I hear now, there will likely be a new controller sold separately for this functionality, once it is ready. :frusty:
  • The plug from the power supply to the controller is not very secure. I ended up wrapping some electrical take around it to prevent it from coming apart.
Performance:
  • Sound: While not silent, it is significantly quieter than the Mag 12 it replaced.
  • Power usage: According to my Apex, the Mag 12 by itself drew 1.6 amps and the DC6000 draws 0.1 Amps. I questions the accuracy of the Apex's current usage metering as the Mag number is higher than it should be and the DC pump's number is too low. Regardless, there is obviously a big power savings there.
  • Heat created: With the Mag, the Apex had my fan on for about 20 hrs a day. Since installing the DC 6000, it has averaged 12 hrs a day.
  • Cost savings: The combo of lower power consumption, and less on time for the fan should save me $10-15 a month in the warmer months. I don't expect much if any savings in the winter, as the Fan doesn't run then anyway, and the heater will run more to make up for the reduced heat created by the pump.
  • Soft Start: Very cool... No noisy wear inducing starts like with the mag/
  • Speed control: Works as expected
  • Feed Timer: Works as expected
  • Pumping power: This is disappointing. While I have not seen actual head loss graphs, I had assumed that the DC-6000 (rated at 1585 gph and a max head height of 13.12') would out pump my Mag 12. In my particular case with approximately 5.75' of head loss, I can tell from the water level in the tank that the Mag 12 is pushing a hair more water than the DC-6000 at full speed. Perhaps the mag is pumping more than rated (which would also explain it's larger than rated power consumption) and this should not be a criticism of the Waveline. I don't know, and don't plan on taking the time to test the actual performance of each.
Summary:
Pros: Build Quality, quiet, low power, low heat, soft starts, feed button, controllable speed
Cons: No Instructions, still not PnP with Apex, loose power connector, not as powerful as expected


Conclusion:
I was pretty disappointed on day one because of the lack of Apex connectivity and the lower than expected pumping ability. Now that I have taken time to reflect and live with the pump, I am happy and would buy the pump again. I am still ticked off that the Apex control was left off after it was hyped by blogs and even tweeted about by Neptune.​
 
Thanks for the review. I am seriously contemplating getting the 12000 to replace my barracuda. I will have less water flow but I am digging the temp and power savings.
 
I have two dc-3000 one in a skimmer and one as a return pump and they are the quietest pumps ever on the market. You cannot hear them unless you put your ear up to them. Now my two vorteches seem extremely loud. If someone is looking for a pump for a bedroom or living room where they need to be quiet this is the pump and the first ever. I would guess the larger the size the louder they are.

The controller that comes with them is very nice and it cool to be able to shut down the skimmer when emptying the cup and also shutting down the main pump or having speed control on a mian pump versus using gate valves..

Since RLSS has not yet produced an interface for the APEX, anyone have a DIY PWM version?
One of the guys near me has modded the controller of his first gen waveline for apex control and offered to do the same for me. I am going to wait at least a month to see if anything is announced. If not, I will see if I can find anyone MACNA that can tell me what the plan is.

I take this back... another DC6000 user pointed out to me that this connection is a water tight connector that needs to be pushed really hard to get it all the way in. Once in, it is very secure. This is one of those places where including a little instruction booklet would have been really useful.

The Waveline can't do apex control yet, but the Jebao DC-6000 works with both the Apex and Reef Angel with the Reef Angel Jebao cable right now (needs a slight mod to work on the apex). I posted a review in the other DC review thread. The Waveline/Diablo/Jebao Gen 2 are all basically the exact same thing.

f your controller on the Waveline has that same connector on the end, you can use the Reef Angel Jebao/Speedwave Cable to run it on the Apex right now:

A couple small updates..

1) Salty Supply has followed up with me multiple times now for feedback on the pumps. I explained that I was a little disappointed in the flow and I was told it was a known issue that has been resolved with firmware. There are new controllers already in the mail that will hopefully give me the additional power I was expecting. Two thumbs up to Chris at Salty Supply for the continued dialogue and helping to resolve the issue.

2) I love this pump more and more each day. I have discovered that water changes are really smooth now thanks to the Waveline... if I turn the flow way down (but not off), it increases the volume of water in the sump. I then pump out water from the sump, add the fresh water back in, and turn the pump back up to full speed. The fish in the tank now have no idea a water change is even happening.
 
Last Friday night I got the RLSS Waveline 4000 installed as my replacement to the Mag 9.5 on my closed loop. Lovin it.

Titus, wanted to know since it you was with the Waveline Gen 2 DC-6000, since I want to buy one but in some forums I saw that with the Gen1 they had problems within a few months. Regards and graces Marian
 
Are the threaded connecters on your pump standard US spec. PVC and what did you use on the threads? Is you pump running cool externally? I am going to be using a jebao DC pump externally on my new system and I have not seen much on people using them that way.

I am still loving the Wavelines...

DC6000- 117 days in continuous operation so far, no problems
DC4000- 65 days in continuous operation so far, no problems

Mine are standard spec... I have them screwed into standard PVC fittings from Home Depot, using blue monster thread tape. The pump feels warm but not hot... like it is maybe 5-10 degrees warmer than the water running through. The Mag 9.5 it replaced ran MUCH hotter.
