My aquarium is almost started cycling, just need to finish adding water and get everything plugged in. For now I have a jebao wp-10 and a little aqueon pump (not entirely sure gph, the tank set-up was purchased second-hand) and a mag-7 as a return pump and as far as I can tell should be pushing around ~550 gph with head pressure and junctions. I plan for a slightly mixed reef tank but mostly lps. My question is, what would be the best wavepump to use? I plan on using the aqueon pump for mixing water for water changes and it will only be in there for the cycle. I don't want a pump that limits where I can put lps in terms of a jet of water hitting them. I've read good things about the wavelink wavepuck in terms of water distribution and same with the gyre type pumps. Opinions?

I really like gyre pumps. We had a icecap 3k on our 75gallon mixed reef.

Did you have the icecap or the maxspect? I saw maxspect should be releasing their new version soon and it sounds like they made some good improvements.

If you think you're going to be in the hobby for a while, invest in quality equipment and something that's been out a while and is often recommended. Those items that are not often recommended or used might not be used for a reason. I ran a 40g breeder for about 2 years and I had an MP10 on it, which I really had to crank up to get water moving throughout the entire tank, but then went to a MP40, which sounds like overkill, but dialing it down to around 30% really gave me nice ,even and gentle flow throughout the entire tank. If it's in your budget, buy something for a bigger tank and dial it down low to produce wide and gentle flow... or by 2 or more small pumps. LPS need flow, but most species prefer not to be blasted with jets of water.

I hear gyres will provide the same effect. I have not tried them due to the noise complaints, but the newly released revisions are supposedly quite so I plan on trying one out.

I just started cycling last night so I'm not worried about flow for another couple months so I think I'm going to get the maxspect 330 and see how that goes. They added some nice features that negate majority of the bad reviews I've read. Should I get the 1 330 or get the 2 pump option? I agree with you about the buy better and dial it down, but I don't want to buy the 2 and really only need 1. The extra $150 would be a nice coral.

In my opinion: I think 1 big one rather than 2. easier maintenance, looks nicer in the tank and less power cords to deal with. I would recommend a back up powerhead option. I always keep some MaxiJets for random jobs that can be used in a pinch if my MP40 goes out. I have a single MP40 on my Reefer 450, so I am a little nervous about that until I buy a second but its pretty reliable.

In the event it goes out, your return pump should provide enough turnover to deal without crazy flow for enough time for you to realize it's out and throw in your backups.
