We also need Randy Holmes Farley

Randy is a great guy and one of my very good friends..So is Boomer ,another chemi junkie..
Yes Boomer is also one of the best outhere, he worked for the millitary with explosives chemistry, very educated in chemistry.

Lots of great people every where. just more freedom here for sure. I have to be very careful on some other forums as well.

We need brains

I always seem to run contrary to the norm and I guess on this one I holding true to form. Yes, I visit that other forum. Yes I read the chemistry forum. Yes there are some interesting threads. There is no doubt that Farley and friends are some smart fellows - (don't take this the wrong way) but maybe not always as smart as they think they are. You see, I don't have too many chemistry problems. I don't have problems keeping my alk and calcium in balance because I ignore the Farley "balanced" two part theory and dose what my tank needs. (If you like chemical formula, I can show you the reaction by which my tank consumes a disproportionate amount of alk) I have very low nitrates (0) or phosphate, no matter how much I feed or how many fish I seem to stock. I don't carbon dose and use next to no GFO. My system works well for me - and I've seen many other systems, run completely differently that also work well. The chemistry part of it isn't that challenging IMHO. I don't think to much of carbon dosing in general - but if it works for you - why should I try and dissuade you?

What I'd really like to see is a marine biologist take on a forum - explain coral metabolism - nutrient utilization, allelopathy, bio-films, bacterial balance etc. I found it interesting that a microbiologist on that other form pointed out that an associate had determined that the white gelatinous mass growing in his bio-pellets was the bacterium responsible for urinary tract infections in humans - Of course though that's not chemistry.

I think I may try out BeakerBob's expertise with a thread. I have tried other forums for my question but it seems to turn into a gigantic flaming thread where people argue and give anecdotal "evidence" hence my migration here :)
Ask away bro!!! I'm glad other sites are like that "pun intended" it keeps bringing new members to this forum... You will find this place laid back and easy..;)

@Robert- Remember you are talking about a guy who has 61 patents and has won the MASNA. It doesnt matter what you think, Randy is a genius,a great guy and a great friend. Im sure whoever has interacted with Randy and Boomer over the years have felt the same.

I readily accept that what I think is of little importance. I have had the privilege of knowing and working with a number of geniuses in my lifetime and although I don't know him personally, from everything I have read and know of Mr. Farley, I can tell that he is a very talented and brilliant individual.

Coincidentally , there is another topic presently in this very forum, (https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/reef-chemistry-forum/88970-can-you-use-carbon-twice-more.html) in which post 10 contains a link: Reactivating activated carbon - Reef Central Online Community Archives which demonstrates exactly what I was alluding to. I point to it - not because it is the most egregious example - but because it was here already here; a representative sample that I didn't have to select. It is but one of dozens of similar exchanges of which I am aware.

Those participating in the thread commented on it - Read it through and draw your own conclusions.

Man y'all stirred up some memories! I've been in the hobby almost ten years... and I remember first interacting with RHF and Boomer for the first tie, great people!

Yes it would be cool to have him over here. That being said we have some pretty awesome members here with plenty of knowledge. We just recently added our own chemist to the mod team here at R2R by the name of BeakerBob! :D

Love Me some BeakerBob!!

I have read some of BeakerBobs threads and reply’s, he is an awesome chemist, very knowledgeable and goes to great extend to answer the question.

We need our own article on these issues. Forget linking all the time! Who wants to write them? :D

I was never much of a writer……. Elementary school ….was a problem, high school was a problem, college was a “draggggg” give me a hammer and a saw, a bulldozer, give me something to build or demolish…………

+1

You explanation could serve just as well as my explanation for why I'll spend all day in our chem forum and be just fine. :-) I'll even add an "and how!" I'm just mad I had to wait until now to find this thread and say this!

I like Reef2Reef. Other forums mostly just make me miss rec.aquaria.

And I agree on the chemistry part - not that hard if you take the right approach. Go slow, focus on alkalinity, both in reading and in practice, and it's hard to go wrong.
