First of all starting this one but had some reasonable discussion from week one given my topic was very open ended.

OLD VS NEW - is there a method of reef keeping or a new equipment you decided to use only to go back to what you were doing originally? What made you change in the first place and what made you go back?

Also don't forget if you have a topic you think is worth discussing please suggest it for a following week

My example is a very common one or so I read. When led's became the rage I hesitated for a while but at a certain point with some lights receiving acclaim I swapped completely, spent the big bucks and grabbed some hydra's. I swapped because of a few reasons but controllability and power consumption as well as less maintenance were big factors.

The controllability and what I could achieve lighting wise was great but I couldn't replicated the feel I got with t5s in regard to the spread and glimmer of the light. In the end I swapped back to t5's.

After a while I incorporated leds and t5s but my t5s still do the bulk of the heavy lifting where my leds simply allow me to control the sunrise to sunset colouration and add a bit of extra power to my midday peak.

I think old equipment in general, can work very well.

Now I wouldn't use an old mag driver when i could buy a jebao. But old skimmers, lights, reactors, sumps, tanks. Would use that stuff used every time.

I still think 2 part dosing is plenty, and anything else is a risk you take.

I have a few new things but my sump is just rubbermades tried newer sump on my 70gl just could not bring myself to spend that kind of money on sump when my old trusted works great and at a fraction of the cost on my 180gl

Did the same thing, I bought the Leds and they had great controllability. But the end of the day after over a year and half with the best led’s I went back to ATI T5’s. I would have gone even farther back to metal halides, I just can’t run them in Florida. If I ever move to up north, I am going back to halides for sure for my sticks
