So the tank in particular is 25 gallons and has been set up in our apartment a little over 6 months (the rock, coral, sand and filter media came from a 4 year old tank, so it cycled almost immediately).

About 3 months ago we added some clown fish and a small bubble tip anemone. the rock the anemone came on had some random zoas on it so we kept that part of it in the tank. since then we noticed this gray slime looking stuff growing from underneath the zoas polyps and now those particular zoas are closed and the slime has completely covered the little rock and has spread to the rock under it. They weren't great looking in the first place, but I'm more concerned with the rest of our tank.

Nothing else seems to be affected and our water parameters haven't changed (temp 78, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 3, calcium 430, phosphate 0, ph 8.1, specific gravity 1.026, alk 9dkh)

Anyone know what this stuff is?

Looks like a very evasive sponge colony. Also that aptasia might be stinging your Zoas

Agreed, it looks like an invasive sponge. I would kalk the Aptaisia and then take a syringe with hydrogen peroxide and squirt it around the sponge area. It may kill the sponge but the zoa's should be fine.

Agree with the peroxide, make sure you turn all water flow off so stays in the area longer. If you're feed Phyto you may want to cut back, sponges thrive on it.

lol I hope it's not an evasive sponge, I'll definitely try the peroxide when I get home. I've been using aptasia-x, but they always seem to pop back up in the same spot. I'll let you guys know how the peroxide works.

I use a concentrated kalkwasser mix to kill aiptasia if they pop up. Works everytime. just turn off the flow and use directly on the center disc. they hate that
