I noticed yesterday that I had a weird ball of white stuff on my sand bed next to my hammers. I suspect it's a clump of spunge either dug up from my sump or my Dragon wrasse found it. Or it's a corpse of something, but have no idea what since all fish are accounted for. I do have a Goby and 2 pistol shrimp. Could even be a decayed pistol shrimp molt or something? I don't know. Or a clump of decaying food, or a clump of bacteria. (I do vodka dose daily).

Also, I notice an almost translucent filament growing on my sand bed. A single one. I have strange life forms forming in my tank. I'm awaiting until they come out of the tank with an alien blaster ray.... The earth invasion will start with my aquarium. :)

So, in all seriousness. I don't know what these things are and curious if anyone here can ID. I think the weird white ball is probably a clump of sponge that came loose from somewhere. It's around 1" in diameter and has a few particles of sand attached to it.

The strand of near translucent filamentous stuff, I have no idea... I got the best picture I could of these two.

That is one hundred percent sponge it usually grows in shaded high nutrient rich water it won’t hurt anything but I would remove what you see to prevent it spreading

I've got yellow sponge all over in my rocks and tubules all over as well. This white stuff is all over in my sump. (Everywhere) I was hoping it would help me export nutrients... If it is, it's not very efficient. :)

I wonder if anyone has done a sponge refugium to see it's nutrient removal capacity?

My phosphates are generally .06 to .09 and nitrates between 25 and 35. (Hana testers).

My Acropora loves the nutrients. They don't like phosphates, but they sure like the nitrates! I think it's the hidden secret to growing acropora. At least so far for me it's working, I just happened to stumble upon it as I panicked as my nitrates rose... I haven't tried to decrease my nitrates in 6 months and my acropora are growing like crazy. So is this white sponge stuff in the sump.

Don't alot of angels eat that stuff?

Most people do not keep sponge eating angelfish, and the cryptic sponges are down in rocks and such anyway. :)

Yeah it’s almost impossible to find something to eat it although I have had luck with nudibranch eating it and there easy to take care of
