I have this red algae growing on my rocks and I am not sure what it is called?
It started as a small patch and has now spread alot and is taking over.
Anyone know what it is called and how I can get rid of it?
Trying to find the cause of this, I do not think it is cyano, it looks more leafy. Would chemi clean or something like that remove this for good?

GFO or Chemipure Elite. Gotta use something with Ferric Oxide in it.

Looks like a red macro algae of some sort. Do you have a Tang or Benny? They tend to like grazing on red macro.

its weird cause i have a tuxedo urchin, sally lightfoot crab, blue tang and a yellow tang and i have been running GFO for the past 2 months. I'm stumped. Should I add more GFO? Or just start doing massive water changes? I was gonna try chemi clean and see if it kills it off but I don't like quick fixes with chemical treatments.

iT is like a fuzzy dark red macro algae. heeeelp!

Ive had Cyano, probably everyone has at one point in time or another. Blowing it off the rocks, and letting the skimmer get it or vacuuming it out helps. More flow helps. Having a Sump, and letting it get hold there helps. Replacing old lamps before they cause an issue helps.
I've still got some, but its in the sump now, exactly where I want it. Growing under a 5000k lamp.

I wish you had a better photo, close up, I'm sure I could identify it. You said fuzzy and red. Is it Gelidium sp. If it was a red macro algae your tangs would eat it, but tangs won't eat Gelidium, so that was another clue. Page 99 & 100, "REEF INVERTEBRATES" by Anthony Calfo & Robert Fenner. Commonly referred to as Red Hair Algae.

This stuff is driving me crazy! Someone recommended a Halloween urchin! I might try that and see if it works.
I will be setting up a new tank in the fall and I may just have to give all these rocks an acid bath !!

The closest thing it resembles on that algae page is red hair algae but it's not really hairy. I'm stumped

Red Turf Algae. Not much eats it but raising your magnesium to 1500 works wonderfully!! Mine is all but gone :)

I took this advice from several ole time reefers, mainly to help keep my alk level stable. The disappearance of the turf algae was one of the benefits :)
I've been running my Mag at 1500 for almost a month now and am noticing a great change in my coral growth. Most noticeable in my LPS :)
