I noticed it a couple of days ago, it smells like nail polish with nail polish, when I open the cabinet doors to the sump, it is pretty strong I’ve done (three)25% water changes in the last three weeks and have changed my carbon it is literally a chemical smell never had it before end it is coinciding with my mass death of fish, perhaps it’s connected, perhaps it is not. I think velvet Ich are the problem

Sorry about your troubles.

Do you by any chance dose nopox? It often can smell that way a bit.

Is anything decaying in your sump? Deep sand bed? Have you checked for corroding equipment? Any chance a contaminant may have entered the sump?

H2S is one of the things that comes to mind but the smell is more of rotten eggs, although it can be a bit subjective...

I’ll have To check the sump carefully, or the main display, it seems like snails get murdered quite often so I should at least pick up those shells out

My skimmer cup when full puts an odor in the room. I always add some h202 to the collection cup and never have a smell
I need to give that a try!

When you say nail polish, first thing I think of is electrical motor/electronics
This for sure. I've been around quite a few house/industrial fires involving chemicals or electrical equipment shorting out. If you get close do you get a burning eye/nose/through sensation? I would check all of your electrical equipment first then move to see if any chemicals around your sump are causing a reaction. BE SURE TO VENTILATE THE ROOM.

+1 nopox smell

I was thinking that something electric was eaither going or about to go. Mass fish death could also be a result of this as what ever may be electrically wrong. Could be putting current in the water.

Carl, did you find the source of the smell?
