Weird thing on my rocks

My boyfriend noticed this thing on our rocks. Not sure what it is but there are two of them. He asked me to post the picture on here and see what the forum thinks it could be and if he should be worried. Any ideas?

If its a hard shell, it may be an old Vermitid Snail.
Or a SPonge, hard to tell if the base is curled from here.

Vermitid Snail

So my boyfriend decided to take one rock out that had one on it so he could examine it. He said it was hard as the rock and basically chipped away at it with a razor. Nothing came out of it but he did notice more on other rocks.

You don't have to remove the rock if you don't want to. You can just break them off. That's what I do. But be carefull they can be sharp.

I hate those things! And yes they can definitely be sharp...
