I removed all my nassarius aka wells after they ate two clams. Hard to tell them apart so better safe than sorry.
 
It looks like a nassarius to me but i'd take it out till someone could better id. #reefsquad
 
There is some difference in behavior which was helpful to me. I've never had nassarius climb on rock or the glass (except very briefly). Whelks on the other hand often crawl on rocks and glass looking for prey.
 
Looks like a whelk to me. One definitive way is to look at its “door”. If it is attached to the shell it is not a whelk. If it is attached to the tail/body it is a whelk.

The tatooed body is also a sign of a whelk.
