on vacation and sitter just notified me my tank has crashed =( and unfortunately my wife does not want more fish because i remain glued to my tank to much unless i can get some free stuff im out of the game for a while atleast till i can train my 9 month old to beg that is hmm it was good talking to everyone here hopefully ill be back soon ....... hate vacations !!! something bad always happens last time our apt was burglarized and tank was smashed ... i guess it just was not meant to be

only thing left is my firefish sitter caught him and started a ten gal to put him in till i get back idk if ill sell him or just let my tank run fallow till its normal again and put him back idk abt my zoas my sitter is color blind and cant seem to find them hopefully they are still healthy when i get back

ya i tried finding someone more experienced but was new to the area so it made things difficult my uncle kept freshwater and turtles so he was my best bet
Sorry to hear. It would be great to have a reef buddy watch/sit your tank while you are on vacation

i moved to the new place rite before leaving on a two month vacation and my wife waited till the week pryor to tell me she ordered the flight tickets

IMHO just give it up and focus on your 9 month old...My 2...

I'm sorry to hear that.
Of course that's not all what I have to say and don't take it the wrong either, but this hobby cost a lot of $$$$ for many of you guys and I'm not even counting the time we put in or better said the time it will take away from your family how ever you want to see that.
I'm always a firm believer to pay experienced company that does this for a living to take care of your tank while you're on your well deserved vacation.
Many times ppl will say "that's good for you if you can pay that person" yeah good point but really it doesn't cost more than $150 just for dropping in twice a week, feed the fish, overall check if all equipment is running good and maybe change out filter socks and clean skimmer cup.
Why is this IMO the only route........... well if you're sick you're not going to see a farmers market DIY cure guru that all kinds of herbs and juice will sell you, you going to see a doctor that will figure out in no time how to tackle what ever you need to be taken care off.
When I'm gone for work or just some time off I have a local aquarium maintenance company in Katy TX "Urban Aquatics" take care of my tank.

every fish i had except my firefish died idk what the cause my sitter had lfs come test but they said all parrameters are fine so im starting to think its disease of some sort but im still in china and cant be sure sitter said all the fish that died turned pale white lost all color to their body and normally i would hire someone to care for my fish but the lfs said they are to far away to come every week atleast the one i know of like i said new to the area

I had something very similar happen to me recently. It was in a 18 hour period. I was asleep/at work and did not find them until I got home the following evening. Did your LFS come out to check? So sorry to hear this. That's horrible.

On the other hand, you're in CHINA! I hope you enjoy your time!

Sorry to hear the bad news. I have the opposite. Our lives have been insanely busy. I have a 12 month old and been in and out of work and I told my wife I was thinking of getting rid of the tank all together. She said no way. Our son loves it. If he's in a fussy mood the tank calms him down immediately. So I agreed to keep it. She let me buy a new setup (used off CL). It's a much better setup and will allow me to control and access everything easier so I guess I'll keep a tank. I just have to plan the transfer to the other tank which has to go in the same spot.
Good luck with your situation.

So sorry things went south while you're away. I just got back from a short trip to find my sitter fed my fish a week's worth of food in one go (swim bladder/gas issues after; thankfully, cleared up with peas) and failed to do daily water top offs, sending salinity sky high in my QT tank and killing a pompom crab. Hearing your story makes me realize I got off pretty easy. I won't trust a non-reefer again with my tanks.

Sorry to see things went bad while you were away. Things always go bad while your away. I've had return pumps go out, skimmers overflow, kalkwasser ato failures, all while I was away for work. Luckily my very capable wife has usually saved the day and in some cases I had to call a budy or local fish store to help with large water changes, but it always seems to happen while I'm away.
