Well, how about that...

You don't have to drill it yourself, as I mentioned earlier I ordered a tank drilled where I wanted and the internal overflow placed where I wanted. They tempered the glass after it was drilled and I let them take the liability of cracking it. Had the custom tank in my home in a couple of weeks after placing the order at the LFS. Most LFS have printed catalogs or diagrams and tank suppliers that will do this and the cost was surprising low compared to the reef ready tanks on the floor that didn't suit my needs.

IMO. I think we all should support our LFS if it's a good one by all means but if it's a shirt one and won't even grantee a fish for 2hrs then that's a place I wouldn't even suggest buying from at all. This the run down. Of you buy fish on line everyone highly says to quarantine correct. The same goes from buying from your local LFS I think. The only plus side I see with buying from your local LFS you physically cam see what you are paying for and getting and you are the one hand picking these fish. Where on line you see a picture and your ordering it not knowing what u are actually getting. And again I am not knocking on line purchase of fish buying I've done it with my freshwater when I had one and sure I'll be doing it with my saltwater as well. There's pros and cons to either local buying and on line buying. But what do all REEFER #1 rule is quarantine.

I do like the guarantee from liveaquaria as well. I moved and somehow a fish got shipped to my former address. They not only credited my account for the full price, but also gave me an additional credit for the same price of 89.00 if I would drive and pick up the fish! I got the fish for free and they credited my account for an additional amount equal to the purchase.

Yes, heavens to Betsy let's call in the Mods to remove mention of one the most popular online fish sites that there is. I've bought 10 whole fish from them. I had a problem with one and they immediately credited it. My LFS won't even guarantee a fish to make it to your house alive. I am sure some people have good, trustable local fish stores and that is great. But I see no reason to support a local store that has no current equipment, mostly sick, aiptasia infested tanks, and staff that has no idea what they are doing for no other reason than they are local. Let them go under - they should. I have options.
[...]

Shopping that way, the only "option" you'll have in your town will be called PetCo.

It's too bad you don't like your LFS - sounds like you or someone could have an opportunity there - but one would still have to be gullible to think that something different is going on at liveaquaria than money-making. (And they do sell the same fish with the same ich, and no they don't all "arrive alive" in spite of the marketing.)

If you are unwilling/unable to do something about it, consider that the LFS operator is your neighbor and that they need your help to improve as well as survive. Sending your money blindly to some anonymous ****ole doesn't do anything for you at all outside of the purchase you are making, hurts you in the long run, and it doesn't make the folks running the local place any better. $0.02

While we're on the subject of anecdotes, the store I worked a few years at offers no guarantees on fish. Why? Because they are experts, have close to no fish losses and know (from long experience over thousands of customers, not conjecture) that customers are generally responsible for deaths that happen after the fish leave the store. Customers are not experts in the vast majority of cases and accidents happen, so this is also a logical conclusion. Exceptions are handled exactly as that - exceptions. On the rare occasion that a customer has a legitimate complaint, it would be apparent (to them and us) and we'd always take care of it. And the truth is that this policy was not controversial with our customers because it was based in reality.

Fish guarantees are a gimmick for selling dicey fish or selling them in a dicey manner. (Shipping fish through the mail for the n+1'th time should always be more stressful than a simple 20 minute ride home from the fish store.)

So take my advice and buy locally if you can.

:) :) :) :) Now to un-hijack this thread! :) :) :) :)

I saw this and was just curious to why? So is it just bc the over flow takes up too much space or bc of the look? The over boxes does work and I know alot of reefer used them so am confused by this. I also have a tank with dual over flow custom that I drilled two holes on each side of the tank two for drain and two for return. The only difference is I did not drill the holes from the bottom of the tank but from the back about 8" or so up from the bottom of tank.

It used to be vogue to flow as much water between your tank and sump as humanly possible. Partly due to the lack of available in-tank flow pumps back in the day. Today there is no need to flow more than two times up to four times the volume of your display tank through your sump to achieve adequate filtration.

Because of that, it was pretty desirable for a while to have custom drilled drains in your tank.

The discovery of the Herbie and Bean Animal drains pretty much eliminated that need as a standard drilled tank can support to these drains styles (including the extra flow) as well.

As far as pre-drilled overflow boxes taking up more space, I find that dubious in most cases.

If taking up no space were a real priority (which it could be) I would suggest considering an all in one/drainless tank. You at least pick up the extra benefits of not having to deal with the issues related to a sump.

Is it one of the used tanks they have out front?

Also, if you join DFWMAS, they will give you 10% off if you show your membership card..

Thanks for the info!
It was one of the new tanks they got a truckload of for their Black Friday sale. I think I honestly bought the absolute last one they had.
