Hey guys! I'm new to the salt water aquarium scene and i'm getting it started up not only for myself, but for my new born son to enjoy. I was wondering if instead of purchasing an RO/DI unit, and/or purchasing water from the LFS, if I could get well water? here are the water results. please and thank you for the help, it's much appreciated.

For a SW tank you need RODI. Theres just no getting around it. Once you buy the unit get the filters and resin from Bulk reef supply. Way cheap and fast shipping. I have well water and my first chamber with a 5 mil filter will turn orange after a few months. And My water incoming to my filter reads 376 TDS ( total disolved solids) And after being filtered is 0 TDS.

So yes you need to buy a filter or Buy water from your LFS.

Welcome to R2R! Ask often and allot!

Mine will turn orange immediately.... If you are going to invest the time and money into a reef system. Invest wisely in good equipment. The first priority is good water!!

can i set up that system right under my sink? i live in an apt. and the only RO/DI units i've seen are big bulky things.

Yep got to have good water there two thing you should not go cheap when starting a reef tank or any salt tank and those are ro/di unit and protein Skimmer

Yep you can do that. Easy to mount. You might need a boost pump also. Id check out Bulk reef suprize for everything. I dont work there or nothing lol. Just love there cheap prices.

Mount it under your counter so the drain water gos in your sink drain. ( make sure your septic can handle it first.) And then Your fill line can stay rolled up till you need it.

how can i make sure my septic can handle it?

also about the protein skimmer i have a seaclone 100 protein skimmer for this tank. it's been running about a week and a half ago, the venturie tube (air thing) has been running at full blast for 3 days now and there's no skum going to the collection cup. do they need to break in before they actually produce skum?

If you should divert the the waste line of the RODI outside on the lawn if you have a septic system. All that water is not good on the drain field it will saturate it.

unfortunately i dont have a lawn xD i live on the second floor of an apartment complex.

Take a look at the 2:1 and 3:1 low waste systems from www.spectrapure.com. You probably have fairly soft water and low TDS in WA so these would be the perfect choice and cut your waste significantly.

Even with their normal 4:1 systems, the amount of waste is less than a normal shower or a days toilet flushes, don't get hung up on the waste, its not going to hurt a septic system.
