I have 2 welsos....one of which is in the pic
neither seem to be puffy unless the lights are out, when the lights are on, they look more like the pic. still colorful. could this be a lighting thing, too much/ not enough, i have T5s and they are about 11 months old? too much flow? all my parameters are good and all others corals seem to be happy.

any thoughts??

It could be light. How much flow does it get? These type corals will not puff up in HIGH flow.

i have 2 MP40s on a 6' 125gal tank. they are currently on constant mode at roughly 75% speed, im going to try and test flow tonight....never really thought about that as a problem until this morning

It could be your flow but does it go down when the lights are off? It is true they do not like high flow. I have 2 actually one is a trachy, I think they are are now called trachy, the true welso gets so fluffy it is almost a giant ball. Also I have wave maker and at times the current will hit the glass and you can see the flesh swaying. Could it be they were in a tank with lower light and it is not use to your's yet? Mine are under 250 mh. Do they eat when you feed them?

I have 3 different welso/trachy brains in my tank and they all do this at one time or another. I don't know why. I have one a BIG green and purple one that I have had for over 3 years now and it "deflates" like that for a day or two then puffs back up and is normal again for a while. I have them under 3X250w halides and mine seem to like the light.......

I know I didnt answer your question . But I just wanted to let you know mine do the same and have been healthy for a long time.

mine are only "inflated" at night when the lights are off, and have always (since being in my tank) "deflated" when the lights are on. the flow does not change at night. the lights are T5s and my PAR reading is fairly low right now. im trying to decide whether or not i wont to go 1 more year of T5s before switching to LEDs. however, one welso i have had for a while, the other i just got within the last couple of weeks. the new one was "inflated" when i bought it and was not within teh first day or two. feeding i have never really tried other than what might stick to them when feeding the fish, maybe feeding is the answer?

Just to show you they are all different mine look more like yours at night. They love to eat and i feed them with light on but I read they mainly eat at night. I feed mine silver sides cut to size. I also have to place a bottle top over the smaller trachy to stop the shrimp from grabbing it. The Welso is almost always inflatted to the point that the food is well hidden you can not even see its mouths it does have several. They take the fish in about as speed as my scoly, just not a dramatic. I feed mine once a week and they always take in the food. I now use it as a judgement. I had one the stopped eatting, and it died in a few weeks.

I feed mine raw bay scallops, cut in about 1/4 in. cubes. I get them in the freezer section at the local supper market. In the morning before the lights come on. I turn off the flow, so the food doesn't blow off, and just reach in and drop it on there mouth's. Keep an eye on it's edges for torn flesh and exposed skeleton, this could mean something else is nipping at it. ALL an ALL it looks like a nice Wellso.

Thats funny, i replaced my bulbs and they are fluffy, who knew they nedded good bulbs, duh! didtn realize they were that bad
