Werid film in sump

Ive noticed that this clear film has started to grow on top of the water in my sump. It is really slimy and slick. I break it up all the time when I change out the socks or empty out the skimmer. All the levels are fine nothing has changed. There is nothing really in my sump a few peaces of live rock and few crabs that got sent down for messing with the corals. It is no where else but the sump. Not in the DT or any other chamber in the sump. Does any one have any clue what the heck it is?

Proteins on the surface, my suggestion would be to add a powerhead to that portion for water movement, and breakup.

Thats usually where it happens, water on the surface tends to stagnate. Need water movement. I had a 1200gph powerhead in my sump when I ran one.

Even an air stone and air pump will break it up.

This happens in my fresh water setups that have low flow as well. The fuge portion of your sump doesn't have the surface agitation or the surface skimming that the display or other sections of the sump has, so the proteins are allowed to settle out of solution and rise to the surface like an oil slick. I get this in my sump occasionally too.

I take some paper towel and gently lay it on the surface to soak it up. Clears it right up and suffices as my protein skimmer for my pico. Or at least that's how I justify it.

Every week when I do my water change I take a piece of filter floss and drag it across the top of my fuge. takes it all out in one or two swipes.

Great tip. Ill start doing it that way
