Wesley's 40 Breeder Sumpless

Yes, I love the Kessils, but I wish there could be a way to make them controllable/dim.

AFter work today, I had to stop by San Carlos to pickup a Nikon 105mm micro lens. This weekend, I'm planning to take some pictures of my 3 month old daughter and 6 year old son (birthday falls on Monday).

Well, since I was in the area, I figured that I can knock out two birds with one stone. Luckily Borrow Lenses is only 2 miles from Aqua Exotic, so I decided to pass by the lfs first to see what goodies Matt has to offer.

As I was making my rounds through each of his aquariums, I noticed a funny rock with umbrella like corals opening and closing. I asked Matt what the coral is and he stated that it's a Christmas Tree coral.

Apparently this SPS works symbiotically with some type of tube worm. It's hard to explain, but that coral sure caught my eye. I'll have to do further research before I can even think about picking it up.

Well, as I was about to leave, I noticed a bright green coral calling my name. I walked over to the tank, confirmed with one of the workers the price and sure enough I picked it up.

Matt did warn me that the Trachy is a "rescue" type of coral. I informed Matt that I had no problem at all and am willing to nurse it back to full health.

Below is a picture of this neon green Trachy.

Boy this thing is bright. I turned my Kessil a350's blue to 0% and left the whites on about 60% and as you can see in the picture, it's still a bright green.

I sure hope that I can get the tissue growing again and nurse it back to 100%.

I am in San Carlos all the time and never even knew aqua exotic existed. I will have to check it out. Cool piece btw.

Yes, you should definetly checkout Aqua Exotic. Matt, owner, is a great guy to deal with.

There are about 3-4 aquariums filled with SPS, LPS, zoas and chalices.

Nice purchase! Give it plenty of food and it will regrow in no time.

I had Christmas Tree Worms on a Porites colony when I first set up my tank. They did fine for me, just need fed phyto and oyster eggs every day. I've heard lots of people say they are hard to keep, but I think it's the same people who don't believe in putting things like phyto in their tanks. The SPS coral they grow on doesn't seem to be a high light coral either, mine thrived under PCs and was in bad shape when I first got it.

Corals purchased on 9/2/12

After a fun filled day of celebrating my son's, Jordan, 6th birthday at Great America, we took a trip out to Pleasanton to checkout a nice war coral that a local reefer was selling.

As soon as I steppd into the house, I saw the war coral. I didn't expect so many eyes, so I just had to purchase it. One problem, it was attached to a huge rock.

Here is a picture the reefer took before I purchased the coral. There has to be atleast 30-40 glowing green eyes.

After I got the coral and rock home, I took my Thor hammer and chisel and smashed the rock. One thing that I accidentaly did was break the war coral into 3 pieces.

Here is a picture of a nice 4 head, softball size neon green hammer. I was able to gey both for a great price.

I had Christmas Tree Worms on a Porites colony...

Thanks for the advice jonbar1.

One of my lfs has a Christmas Tree Worm on porites. That is by far the best symbiotic relationships I have seen.

When the worms close up, it reminded me of a scene from the movie Avatar.

I may look into purchasing that coral.

Nice updates Wesley!

Funny enough, I also have that same war coral, all red with yellow/green eyes. If you feed it it will grow like crazy for you!

And happy belated birthday to your son! lol you're gonna think I'm kidding but my birthday was yesterday (4th)...and guess what, my wife bought me a christmas tree worm rock for my birthday...

Keep the pics comin!

This afternoon, I was on the internet searching various reef forums for anything interesting to read or buy.

Well, I happended to visit my LFS, Neptune Aquatics, website and lo and behold, Robert and Cerissa are getting married. So in honor of their celebration, they will be having a 20% off sale starting today, Monday 9/17 and ends Sunday 9/23.

Of course I couldn't pass up on a sale and I know Robert and Cerissa just brought back 11 boxes of corals.

As I entered the shop, I couldn't help but stare at this nice rainbow acan frag. There had to be about a good 4-5 heads. I immediately asked one of the friendly employees, Garrett, to quickly bag up the frag for me, before another reefer see's it.

Next, I ventured off to the $9.99 SPS section. Now, my plans for my 40 Breeder is primarily Z's & P's as well as LPS. But, when I saw the frags that Robert and Cerissa are offering, I couldn't hold back. Plus, where else can you go and find nice size $9.99 SPS frags?

Well, I decided on purchasing a green/purple tenius. I don't know the name, but the coloration caught my eye. Who knows, maybe I'll just go full mixed reef and add a bunch of SPS in my tank too.

I'm not sure if I was bitten by the SPS bug, but recently my attention and searches have been on SPS corals.

Here are a few frags I was able to pickup from a local reefer.

The Green Slimer is glowing and all I have are my white LED's on.

Nice pick ups man! Just take the SPS game slow. It takes awhile to see if they're happy in your tank or not. Oh yeah, I was also told to be extremely picky about the acros you get. Get only the ones that you really like, because they'll end up taking a lot of space!

Thanks Darwin for the suggestion, after checking prices on SPS, I'll probably hold off on a lot of purchases.

I can't believe that some reefers sell one inch collector pieces for $100-$200.

I don't know whats worse, spending a couple hundred on SPS or chalices. I got bit by the chalice bug a few years ago and when my tank crashed my heart just sank.

The only expensive single item I will purchase will be a Space Invader if I can find one. I have been salivating over that piece for a long, long, long time.

Corals sure are expensive. I can't imagine how many high end lap dances I could have had with the amount of coin I've dropped in the last few months...maybe I would have been better off with a FOWLR...Yeah right.

Happy Reefing.

I visited Neptune Aquatics on 9/21 and picked up a few more frags.

I have been eye balling the Neptune Sunset Leptastrea for a long yime. I just never had the heart to pull the trigger and make the purchase. Well, on 9/21 I finally man'ed up. I love the green base and orange circular coralites.

In the picture is a red Monti and blue acro.

A nice looking Meteor Shower frag.

On 9/22, I contacted a local reefer that I puchased corals from over a year ago.

We spoke for a few minutes about his 90 gal reef tank and how it's progressed as well as his purchase of 2 AI Sol's he upgraded to.

Well, I passed by his house to check up his setup and ended up leaving with a couple of sticks.

ATL Rasberry Lemonade Nasuta & Pink Lemonade (both frags browned out possibly with the AI SOL upgrade or when skimmer was out of commision for 1 month).

I am going to see if I can rescue these two frags and bring them back to their original color under the Kessil a350.

Nice acan frag!

Kessils are gaining steam...I've heard of several LFS now switching some lighting to Kessil.

How's your Acropora doing? I've been wondering others experiences with growing SPS with kessil, i have had good luck thus far with very good color retention.

I only had about 2 SPS frags when I switched over to Kessil.

My Bonsai GARF look a like is great. The color still has a deep purple base with neon green polyps. The base of the frag has been growing very fast. The whole frag plug is almost covered. I'll try and find a picture I took when I rented a Nikon 105mm macro lens.

The other SPS frag is a Subulata. The colors is a light purple blue. I am still waiting for the base colors to show more. I have great polyp extension and the bottom base is growing fast too.

All the newer SPS frags I've added recently has kept its polyp extension and color. I'll have to wait 3 more montbs tosee more changes.

I have a feeling you'll be noticing better color on those acros sooner than that, my SPS love the kessil. I've had bleaching reversal with some acropora tips occurring in less than a weeks time and i've also found that leptoseris are growing very fast at the bottom of my tank just to throw another coral at you that you can start purchasing

I hear you on the expensive SPS bug...I've been bit too. Awesome pickups tho, man, love that slimer and sunset leptostrea.
