What’s more important?

I can only buy one of these at the moment so wondering what’s more important to have running. Protein skimmer or filter. 70 gallon with live rock and sand. May or may not start corals later. Also are there hang on the back filters or skimmers that are somewhat quiet that y’all would recommend?

IMO get a filter before skimmer, never used any HOB equipment like that so I’m no help but I would highly advise getting a sump for your tank.

Skimmer. A skimmer removes stuff. A filter to be effective at nutrient export would have to be cleaned twice per week and that would be a drag. If you set up a sump, you can use a filter sock and a skimmer.

Yup. They make overflows that are pretty much like a HOB filter.

Actually I guess I’m going to try to get a canister filter. Not hang on back. So it will look nicer

I'd go with the filter first. Faithful and frequent water changes will make up for the lack of a skimmer. Once you tire of all the water changes, you'll get a skimmer for sure...
