What’s this valve for?

Just wondering what this valve is for on my RODI. It’s always closed; I opened it just before taking the pic

It’s a Manuel flush valve to back flush your Ro membrane

Some people do it before they make a new batch of water. I do it about once or twice a month. Kinder when I remember.

You can DIY one, with a couple of “Y” fittings and a valve, that’s what I do.

What instance would I need to do that?

You just open it every once in a while, theoretically flushing the membrane, extending its life. Whether it actually does anything is questionable though.

Does flushing lower TDS? Mine is reading 5ppm

If it reading 5 it’s time to change out your Di cartridges and probably the sediment and carbon also.

Yeah I just changed the DI and was wondering if I needed to change the others as well…not sure why I didn’t do that already

I flush mine before using each time using this valve.

With new DI it shouldn’t be reading 5 on the output. The sediment and carbon on to protect the Ro membrane. Depending what’s coming out of the RO membrane the DI should bring it to 0.
I would test what the TDS is coming from the RO before the DI

Maybe I’ll change the carbon and sediment cartridges and go from there. I appreciate the help

No doubt a flush valve and some units especially cheaper ones may be absent of this valve

It’s a membrane flush valve and if you flush it out before and after use for a few minutes by turning it perpendicular it prolongs the filters.

If you would’ve been using that flush valve it possibly would’ve made your membrane last longer this is why I bought the auto flush valve that flushes every hour

According to most RODI manufacturer instructions, flush 1-2 minutes before and after using the filter (each time).
