What a Nightmare!

What's the difference between nightmares and red wines? I do not have the nightmares but I do have red wines, and IMO they look almost the same.

Hope this will clear up any confusion.

I originally received the Nightmare palys from Rommel awhile back, along with Serene Novas and another morph he called the Starwars Palys. (Hypertek, this is what you have. Nightmare palys never seem to develop the PE neon green slit.) I wish I had more updated shots to articulate my points, but unfortunately I lost them while a local was watching over my tank during a week long vacation. (This was awhile back.) When I first saw these pictures rolling in, I was delighted to see them back in hobby since Rommel lost his frag and I did not get a chance to set up any back ups.

They rarely morph, but the only signature morphing they seem to show is the distinctive green aura of center oral disc admist the red specks that stands out clearly. The solidity and clarity of this green aura seems to be the key marking, though it may be exhibited in other similar morphs. The severity of specks against the black background seems to vary depending on the environment. This leads me to believe that they are in the same family as the Sopranos, Mohawks, or Chong Bongs - which are all distinctively separate from the Darth Maul or the Headless Horsemen family. (I don't know why they keep getting tagged along?) They also seem to show extreme tolerance for new environments, and lack the uber sensitivities of red wines that we've all become so familiar with. Not to mention the fair normal rate of growth rates whereas Red Wines, in most cases, regress.

It is easy to confuse them with Red Wines at a quick glance, but I can assure you that this is indeed a unique morph. I can start arguing about the pattern visible on the skirts, the frequency of the markings, blah blah blah, but I think that'd be too much. Well, there's my explanation of Nightmare palys FWIW. :) Hopefully, one day I can re-obtain both Red Wines and Nightmare Palys to do a side by side shot but for now, I'm just glad that it's back in the hobby.

Oh, btw. Since we're being so scrupulous with names here, the proper name is Ruby Red, not Red Wine. Noobs. :D

Wat was ur name over on SWF?

Same screen name, I don't quite post all that much, but enjoy the reading. Well, I enjoy anything to do with reef tanks...hehe. I also have my own local reef club site that I started, but its kinda slow so I get on the bigger forums like this one. My biggest passion right now has to be zoanthids.

Anywho... Yea names are kinda over rated....Red wines, Nightmares, Darth Mauls...whatever they are, they are awesome!

Hmm, yeah... I bought them as Darth Mauls. Obviously they aren't. When they first came in they looked like this -

Those definitely look alot like Nightmares on Coralpedia... and even flricordea's pictures made it on there as Nightmares.
Over time they've morphed into a brighter red-speckled polyps, but either Red Wine, Ruby Red, Darth Maul, Nightmares .... I don't care a whole lot, they are still my favorite.

Cool. They made the Pediacoral pic of the month. Whatever they are.

I got them July 10th. One frag with 3 polyps and another with 6. The 3 polyps is now 9 and the 6 at 21 so I guess that would be concidered moderate/fast?

Sweet.. U havent ever posted any pic of the frag u got for urself?
I can't get a good pic unless I move it to the front and it is attatched to a large rock. Cost me $200 so I do not play with it too much. Plus I have so many zoas right now it can get a bit overwhelming. Keeping them all cared for, fed and all is someitmes all I can do much less get pics of them all.

Wow $200.00 for 9 polyps didn't know they were so expensive . Mine has grown 2 new polyps since 8/14.

Darth Maul next to Nightmare Paly the size is quite a difference. The baby (right above the DM) is as big as a medium size DM polyp.

If anybody wants to sell me a nightmare polyp shoot me a PM. I didn't think these guys grew worth a darn but apparently some of you are having some luck!

you can see them if you look really hard in with the group of zoas at the top-most left of the pic.

Yes, they do cost a bit, but they do grow fast it seems.

Thanks and yes. Did some local trades and some went to a buddies tank just started to stock up. Pretty much put the rest in here. I am winding down and looking to get a break so won't be doing any others besides this one for a while.
