I don't have much of an idea but could it be some type of coralline algae? If so, a sea urchin would probably eat it.

I'd say it's a type of Halimedia. It could also be Neptune something-or-another but I forgot the name. IMO, it might not be algae at all... but that's probs not all that bad. Exactly how big are the cloves?

Wait, nevermind, I'm stupid. It's halimeda. Just get an urchin or a naso tang or something, it'll all be fine.

Yes there are two types of algae (well, you know, kinda) micro and macro. Micro is microscopic, but stuff like kelp is macro. For example, green jointed tuft algae, my favorite macro is kinda cool to display like a coral. And I think your right, salty. But if not, what is it? A type of macro flagellate or something?

Can algae have strains and morphs like zoas and corals?

Ohhhhhhhh, it would be sooooo cool to have some GREEN dragons tongue/breath macro!!!!

Watch what happens when you throw a long spine at em, if your worried. For now, tho, I would let it become an experiment

Thanks for all the feedbacks guys. I will give my friend the info he need and i will tell him to try a urchin or a naso. Will tell you all if its working or not

Actually I would just do an urchin; naso's haven't actually had halimeda as a proven part of their diet.

Okei guys some new information from my friend. They are around 3-4mm and When sticking a needle in it is like its crushes so you guys still think its the same?

At first I suspected some kind of calcareous algae to, but it's not! Its a foraminifera (not sure what kind)
Even if not considered harmful, in the numbers he has in his tank they are really covering everything; LR, sandbottom and even on some corals........
So... does anyone know any critters that like to munch foraminiferans? I have read that some hermits might take a bite?!

But also, I would see what happens when you let it grow. Not because I wish ill harm to your stuff, but because, well, is it really hurting anything? If not just keep it from growing to corals/ nems if ya got any, and watch what happens!
