i have this reddish maroon algae growing in my refugium. Can anyone tell me what it is. It has grown slowly and my chaeto has shrunk to pretty much nothing over the last few weeks. I thought it was cyano but it's not on the rock it's in the bare bottom and spreading up. Not sure of my phosphate level. Hannah checker coming any day now. Temp 77 Nitrates are between 5-10 ph 8 alkalinity 11 calcium 420 salt 1.026.

It pretty low. It's a trigger ruby 36 sump. I just added a small powerhead and I'll kill the lights for a couple days.

Some of the sumps don't allow a good flow. Esp if you already have a low turnover. The chato will appreciate the extra flow quite a bit

I'm getting ready to fire up my fuge area in my sump soon, so chaeto shopping here I come. In the past I've always tumbled Chaetomorpha with just enough flow. Not too fast, just enough to turn it. Allows it to stay clean and light to reach all sides. Small power head works well to tumble it.

I have a sump like yours and just added a power head to it. I'm using it as a fuge/ frag

Keep in mind. A sump is also mainly a gravity filter.
Particles go down and by ther shear weigh , as well as lower flow they settle and don't go back up. A lager head will stir it and send it back up to the dt.

I found that removing cyano by hand is futile it just grows right back id recomend increasing flow and stop dosing any iron copper or anything that contains silicates , also side note cyano is photosynthetic so turning the fuge light of for a couple of days might do it well

I had the same issue due to the baffling in my sump, had to remove some of the baffles to get the water to flow better. Your sump has a good design power head should help as well butt possible more return flow
