Ill try to condense this. Im looking for reassurances that Im dosing correctly. Not chasing numbers, just trying to establish a good range. I think Im a little out of balance? Mainly Im unsure about max daily doses. I use Red Sea ABC liquid. Here are params:
Tank is 14 months old mixed reef
10 gal water volume
79 degrees
1.025
pH 8.1
Alk 7.8
Cal 380
Mg 1260
Nitrate <5
Phos .02
I feel like I need to bring the big 3 up, esp Mg? Desired range 8.5, 450, 1400 ish. What is the max recommended ppm dose of each? I feel like Mg is especially way off, unsure best approach to get it in range safely. Reef calc says 52.9 ml. Thinking increase some water changes?
Thanks!!

I don't think it's max that's the concern, although the recommend values for all are well known. There's also a per day increase limit (recommendation)...50 ppm Ca, 1.4 dKH and 100 ppm Mg.

To be honest though, this look ok to me. Maybe a bit low normal for Ca and Mg but otherwise solid numbers I'd like to have.

I agree with all of this. I prefer to keep my Mag around 1400. Salinity might be a little low as well. It sounds like from your question that you're perhaps manually dosing once a day and concerned you may be dosing too much at once? If you find you're dosing a lot, it may be time to add a couple dosers for Cal/Alk. It's generally recommended to balance dosing throughout the day to keep it stable, especially with Alk. The concern is not the amount you're dosing per day, but what the swing is following each dose. If it's once a day, you might have a very large swing. Break that up throughout the day and the swing becomes very small.

Thanks! I meant the per day increase limit. Are those numbers you posted from the Red Sea instructions?

I am manually dosing twice a day to spread it out. 4am 4pm based on work:cool: 100ppm of mag was mentioned as well as the reef calculator in this forum, however RS instructions say 10ppm.

No...online calculators...pulled this from BRS (never can remember and have to look up) but have seen similar values on other calculators and articles. I suspect at some point in the beginning they all came from RHF anyway....based on sound principles and data of course. :)

Thanks, I found the same info! The reef calculator above is what inspired this thread. Says I need to add 53 ml of mg. Do you think the 10ppm recommedation from the Red Sea are just really conservative?

I don't know what they base that on, then again...not 100% sure what BRS bases theirs on either. It could be just a "well, it sounds bad to do too much at once" kind of thing instead of an actual "this will cause damage limit". Also, it might be just a best practice...you want to approach parameters slowly when making large jumps. 10 ppm does seem a might restrictive.
