What the heck is going on?

Snails want to do one thing all the time. That would be “eat”! Your tank looks rather sterile and new. I’m guessing they’re doing what people do while fishing. Congregate where they think the food is. Lol ?

Have they been recently added? I've had them cluster together when first added when all added at once. Or like mentioned above they are trying to find food and the other shells are the only source of algae

EDIT : it may be worth adding some nori attached to a rock or some algae wafers.

That would be my guess as well -- trying to eat algae off of each other's shells.

I did think to myself after i posted this "wow my tank is really clean". It's been up and running for 7 months now. I have 6 mexican turbos. Tomorrow I'm going to move them all to the sump/refugium have them party then move them back to the display, gives the glass some time to accumulate some algae. Thanks for the responses, helped me come up with that idea.

After 7 months you should be getting all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff growing.
