What are people using for Bare bottom SPS tanks?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been away from the hobby for 19 years. Lots has changed including this forum! Lots of knowledge here!

Back then bare bottom was just starting to take off and people were using starboard.

Are people still using this? Or something else?

Yeah that’s what I’ve been reading. Just wondering what people are using to protect the bottom of their tank.

I used a layer of Starboard on the bottom of my bare bottom acro tank. I originally started with a very thin layer of sand but sucked it out years ago when I found I couldn't achieve my desired level of flow. The starboard has worked out fine and over the years has become totally covered by thick coraline.

I’ve always used starboard as well. My new 400g tank has a acrylic bottom. Not much has changed in the barebottom realm haha

I just switched to bare bottom and got a sheet of 1/4" black starboard. I really like it and will never go back. In the process of adding new acros after initially starting this tank as a FOWLR last January.
