I added some chemipure elite and purigen about a week ago. Since then I have not had clear water. Instead I have these bubble like things... Any ideas as to what they are? Tank is maybe 1.5months old started on dry rock, and fugi LS

Hey MrCoffee2,

Hope all is well!

If your tank is only 1.5 months old, you want to avoid (at least IMHO) adding any chemical filtration. Give your tank time to establish a thriving population of nitrifying bacteria (along with phosphate and nitrate). A bacterial additive and carbon source (vodka in small doses) is a much better alternative than the chemipure and purigen. This is also going to help seed your dry rock with beneficial bacteria. This will really help you in the long run.

As for the bubble like things, can you get a pic or add an arrow to the bubbles? Are they in the water column or on the rock? Are you using the chemipure and purigen in a reactor or a filter bag? What is your nitrate and phosphate level?

Thanks James!

I started it with 50/50 tank water / RODI water. I am not too concerned about the cycle, as I wont really be adding anything for 4-5 months. I just want to know why these little flurries are now all over the place. You can see them if you look above my rock, notice how the water is not clear? All those white specs are floating around and have been that way for a few days.

I can take the chemipure and purigen out. Do you think it will keep out of water? If not, I'll leave it in.

I would take the purigen out. The purigen has a consistency of small grain sand. If the filter bag you are using has a micron size large enough to let the media through, you will have flurries of white particles throughout the tank. The Chemipure is carbon, GFO, and other media if I remember correctly. The size of the chemipure media should be large enough to stay in the filter bag. Also, great idea on waiting 4-5 months before adding anything!
