They are really thin little tentacles coming out from the lower crevices of the rock. It is almost like they are pulling the sand bits in sometimes, but mostly seems to be just feeling around. They are about and inch or two at the longest that I have seen. There is also a much longer thinner thread that is cast from the top of the rock, but that might be a different critter.
