What are you guys feeding your acanthos?

Picking up an acanthophyllia today. What are you guys feeding yours? How often? Any other care tips? Oh, and can you show a photo of yours? I'll post a pic of mine as soon as I get it here.

Have never fed them. I dose the tank every second day, ocean snow, phyto, reef roids, fuel. All broadcast feeding.

i was reading a guys advice here so just passing it along. Hope this helps and take care

"Find out what kind of acan it is. If it's an acan lord, those aren't very aggressive at all, and can be put close to other corals if the other corals won't sting them. Acan lords are also not actually acans, they were reclassified as micromussas, but people call them acans. If it's an acan echinata, it's very aggressive, has long sweeper tentacles, and should be kept far away from other corals.

Either way, feed it. Most LPS like to be fed. Bits of mysis, Reef Roids, whatever you have that it'll take. Once every week is a good starting point. "

I think mine would eat small mammals if i let it. I stick with mysis/lps pellets that i spotfeed my other lps with usually. Occassionally i will give him good size chunks of shrimp though.

Not feed them? It's too much fun watching them eat to do that!

I've come to really dislike reef roids because of the problems that it's caused in my builds, so I save them for the blue cloves and gorgonian in the pest jar. My acans seem to enjoy mysis the best. Or maybe I just enjoy watching the acans vacuum up mysis the most.

Looks great. I wish they weren’t so expensive I would love to get some. I like them better than scolys

I feed ours pieces of krill or silversides cut up to the size the polyp can eat.
they love meaty foods!

I have two acantho in my 20 IM. Both of them love mysis shrimp, and I feed them once a week. Sometime I also feed them fish food. They have no problem to take and digest it as well. They do extend better after eat, so I am assuming they like to eat.

I feed mine my fish food blend. Its made out of sea food like fish etc so it's fine to feed to corals. I once fed it coral food (Hikari Coralific Delite) as well and it didn't seem to mind. Also, feeding at night is easier as their feeding tentacles are already out.

Mine seem to not like to eat very much. I tried to feed them LPS pellets, but after 10+ minutes, the pellets are still sitting on them, not moving much. In comparison, the trachy took the pellets in within a minute or two.

Is there a visible difference between the acan lord and the acan echinata?

Yes VERY DIFFERENT.

but this thread is about Acanthophyllia not Acanthastrea (the common “acans” which are actually micromussa genus not acanthastrea after recent genetic testing discovered)
