I will make a list, because it really is not just one item. Some have been listed above:
Refractometer
RODI Unit
Chiller
LED lighting (Saves a LOT of money on electricity and bulbs!)
Controller
Hanna Phosphate test kit
Phosban Reactor (running ROWAphos)
New style circulation pumps instead of powerheads
The internet (to access certail sites)

FYI- After seeing an Apex up close and personal that is the next item on my wish list. Followed by better LED lights or a ultru blue LED strip.

I really wish I had one!
Bare minimum equipment - Tank, Lights, Heater, Pumps/Power Heads, Refractometer, Heater, Skimmer, thermometer.
Other basics for setup/maintaining – RODI Water, salt, rock, test kits, Kalkwasser, Magnesium source.
After that, if I am buying RODI, then a RODI system
After that, Siphon tube with bulb pump
After that, a strong pump for sumpless setups, requiring 15 gal or more water changes.
After that, then ATO (added benefit of simplifying Kalkwasser dosing)
After that then a Controller starts to make sense.
Canister/reactor - if/when there is an issue with Phosphates, etc.

A microscope? Really?....hmmm, interesting idea! Guess since I had FOWLR wasn't too worried about it. But now shifting over to reef, that might be a piece worth considering.

One thing not mentioned is TIME 
. I don't mean time with your hands in the water.
My wife enjoys the tank. My time is spent reading and researching (I started the hobby late so I had some catching up to do).
I'm not even going to think about the hours spent sourcing parts and building the ats, lights, herbie drain system in a RR tank, frag racks, my DIY 4 cartridge spectrapure DI rack. Ohh. And the degassing of co2 from my water source pre RO system.

I have a few basic USB webcams connected to an old laptop and use Yawcam to stream it. I also have the streams tied to my apex fusion dashboard. http://www.yawcam.com/
In my sump room I have a controllable IP cam that's wireless and streams out. The one I got is a pilot gaurdcam. Very good night vision as the lights are normally turned off and I like I can control it. It doesn't have zoom and it's only viewable from an apple or android app and not a basic desktop/laptop like browser.

I have two that havent been mentioned.
1 is the the 150 gpd upgrade to the RODI system, w/ brute can + float switch. I dont have large storage tanks and before this upgrade it would take days to make new water, not its just a few hours. Filling 5 gal. buckets in 25 minutes also helps me keep my QT in good health.
1. Towels, paper towels and shop vacs have been mentioned but those have nothing on the great SHAMWOW !!!!!!!
