I need to do something with my cotton candy chalice. It is trying to grow directly to the rock it's on and I need to move it while I still can. How will it continue to grow ? Will it just conform/grow to whatever it is on ? Do I have to place it on the sand to get the flat growth I'm looking for ?

From my limited experience with the chalices in my tank putting him on the sand should prolly work, otherwise he will grow onto the rock. Another option is to get a nice flat rock or piece of tile and glue him onto that(what I would do).

Get some reef putty

and make another larger frag disk, then glue the bottom of the present disk on the new one...You have to let this putty dry around 1-3 hours out of water to get it solid

he will for sure grow and encrust onto the rock. I have one that is massively encrusted onto one of my rocks and there's no getting him off. +1 on putting him on the sand bed. works great.

Also,if you leave it alone, the chalice will encrust on the rocks. Not all chalices encrust, some plate, but im pretty sure the type cotton candy is,is the type that will encrust on rocks.

the chalice looks pale compared to the other chalices in your tank... that coral should have a bright blue on the skin and bright pink on the eyes. that trick from klr sounds like a good one, obligating it to plate.

I have chalices that plate and will never attack to the rock, however the ones that encrust do such an efficient job, you will have to break it to get any part of it off.

Do ya think it needs more light ? It has had the best growth out of the whole cluster of chalices. You can see here in these progression pic's. https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/photography-forum/54724-side-side.html

its growing great but you can tell there is a huge difference in coloration from when you got it till now, params? chalices are not really into high light, they adapt to their environment like many others, but they grow in that plate pattern because they are deeper water corals and thats their way to take the most light out of whats left penetrating. after my experience, the higher you place your chalice, the more it will encrust getting away from the light. i tested this with a miami hurricane, i placed it high and it encrusted and when it was lowered it started plating again. hope this helps you a bit.
