My 65 has turned absolutely filthy. Byropsis snuck in on a frat and has made itself fe at home. What looks like Cyanobacteria has taken over. So now it time to take charge and whip it back into shape. I accidentally tapped post, so please disregard any grammar issues, tried to delete this but could only edit.

Not a hard fix biologically, but a fair job lies ahead for having waited. If after trying other methods you want something faster I'll take the challenge in this thread:

The procedure would go like this

Place all corals fish and live rocks in holding container leaving only live sand, solid brown waste water and the tank.

Throw out the sandbed and either don't use sand on the rebuild or use new sand caribsea arrive alive wet pack that is fully rinsed and brand new (rules out reusing sand laden w po4 which the cyano on the sb indicates)

Use razor to scrape the tank clean


Fill up with 100% new water and rinsed sand (optional) such that when you stir up the sand to any degree, no clouding occurs

Direct treat the rocks and the frags and don't treat the coral polyps, no algae is on them, its a substrate hitchiker as you stated.

Put items back in new tank for a skip cycle brand new redo. I have five or six threads handy of us doing this as needed and thats only from this year.

The option exists to simply starve it all out with gfo but from the tiny portion I can see of the sandbed its large grain and accumulated and anoxic in areas, it must go if you want long term eutrophication prevention. Fine grain is ok if you like having sand


Not said of judgement, said because mine too was anoxic after ten yrs running and I just redid my whole tank and logged it in a thread in the exact steps above.

The time to administer changes in your nutrient control is strictly only after having done the work required to replace the entire sandbed. Use your nutrient control changes to prevent this, not to address it. A solid Saturdays ten hours of work is what fixes it to appear brand new by next week.

Jump your MAG up to 1600 using Kent Tech M. You will see the Bryopsis turn yellow and die out, once its all gone, then you can let the MAG come down.
Get more flow in the cyano areas, and keep wisping it away when you see it start up.

I think part of the problem is how the rock is arranged. I noticed a few spots where dirt build up. We've been incredibly busy preparing for our first baby, so I've kinda neglected it. I tested the water tonight and it's embarrassing...cal, mag, and alk are low and the pH is down as well. The sand bed is a mix of fine grain and coarse. I like the way sand looks, but if need be I can replace it. And thanks to whoever edited the thread title, could do it from my phone.

It honestly breaks my heart to see these pictures. But I think you just need to beef up the flow, try to manually take out as much as possible, and get rid of those phosphates and nitrates. Maybe cut down on feeding or if you don't use rodi water ITS TIME TO START, a rodi system is a must have. You could also beef up the clean up crew.

Does mine too, and my wife. She really love this particular tank. I really don't know that I can increase flow too much more, there is a lot of movement in the tank. I bought the system used, don't know the flow rate, the power heads are koralia evolution. I use ro water, currently we have to buy it. I have a unit, just waiting on a new membrane. My current clean up crew is five blue legg hermits, and maybe 10-15 Nerite snails, less than 10 ceriths, and one peppermint shrimp. I do it know the exact number of snails, I know some have died, I see the empty shells.
