They are definitely animals. And to be exact, each polyp is an animal. I just asked my good friend that is a marine biologist.

Corals are animals, phylum Cnidaria - related to jellyfish and of course, sea anemones. They're photosynthetic like plants because of the zooxanthellae they host within their bodies.
