What cause STN?

I will tell you this, I have a bacterial issue (I assume could be some other micro-organism) in my tank at the moment, at the edges of sps or any compromised spots I am seeing bacterial necrosis, really slowly the tissue gets eaten and is replaced by a brown mulm-like deposit. I am really stumped as to how to stop it on the undippable colonies I have. So I think there other viable forms of necrosis other than light and parameter based issues.

Keep the big 3 steady is number 1, to high or to low nitrates can be a big factor. A couple tanks back I was using a non food grade trashcan to mix my water, it took me forever to figure out where the problem was coming from, so every water change I was hurting more than helping. During that time every sps I put in the tank would RTN within 3-4 days. If your nitrates, phosphate, and big 3 are good sps should thrive.

What was the cause of the non food grade can? I am using a plastic storage been. Probably no food grade either.

I have coralline growing crazy in my tank and I just lost 2 sps frags. Got water back from triton too and nothing tested out of the ordinary.
